[Nashville, TN] – The Tennessee Small Business Alliance (TNSBA) issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s State of the Union address:
“Thanks to the President, the state of our union is ‘dirty.’ His alarming and dangerous agenda to weaken environmental and public health protection standards threatens the wellbeing of Tennessee, our economic growth and health.” said Tennessee Small Business Director, Lenda Sherrell. “President Trump’s agenda to unravel fuel efficiency standards at the behest of auto executives and lobbyists threatens our innovative leadership, economic growth and takes us backwards on the progress made reducing pollution and our dependence on foreign oil.”
Lenda added, “We don’t have to choose between protecting clean air, water and land – and growing our economy. In fact, strong communities depend on clean, healthy, vibrant environments to grow.
The fuel efficiency standards supported by Senator Alexander and Senator Corker are working – they are saving us money at the gas pump, reducing our dependence on foreign oil, cleaning the air in our communities, improving public health and spurring innovation and economic growth. Senator Corker and Alexander should continue to stand up for their vote and reject pressure from Washington to rollback the fuel efficiency standards that working, saving money, cutting our dependence on foreign oil companies and cleaning up the air breathe and communities we build our businesses in.”.
Across 48 states, 288,000 American workers are building clean car technologies. By siding with corporate execs and undermining these standards, the president is threatening those innovative auto jobs.
Americans have already saved $50 billion from these standards, even as the auto industry has enjoyed record sales and strong profits. The auto industry has been moving in the right direction. The President’s attack on fuel efficiency standards takes us backward. Tennessee’s small business owners know that the choice between growing our economy and protecting our environment is a false choice.
